The Ministry of Fisheries has requested a scientific report on fish populations in Sri Lankan waters following concerns raised by fishermen over declining catches. Deputy Minister of Fisheries Rathna Gamage said the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) has been tasked with conducting the assessment. According to the Deputy Minister, fishermen have reported a reduction in their fish catch, prompting the ministry to seek scientific data on the current situation. NARA has also been asked to assess the potential impact of El Niño conditions on fish stocks and fishing yields in Sri Lankan waters. Gamage said the government will consider necessary measures concerning fishing activities and the management of fish stocks based on the findings and recommendations of the report.
