
A Sri Lankan air passenger has been arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle foreign-manufactured cigarettes worth Rs. 6 million into the country. The 30-year-old suspect, a resident of Divulapitiya in Minuwangoda, was arrested today (08) by officers of the Police Narcotics Bureau attached to the airport. Police said the suspect had arrived from Dubai with the cigarettes concealed in two pieces of luggage. He was arrested while attempting to leave the airport with the consignment. The suspect has been released on police bail and is due to appear before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court on August 19.
